Glitch

IOS – Lead Designer
2013

The Project:

“Glitch” was an educational game for iOS developed in collaboration with Apple’s AI system, Siri. As the lead designer, I played a central role in conceptualizing and creating a unique universe built on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML. The core idea was to empower users to manipulate their virtual world using coding skills acquired through interactions with Siri.

The Process:

  • Collaboration with Apple on Siri Integration: My role involved working closely with Apple to integrate Siri into the game as an in-game helper named “Glitch.” This collaboration aimed to enhance the educational aspects of the game by leveraging Siri’s capabilities as an AI assistant.

  • Designing the Game’s Language and Learning Systems: Drawing from my background in web development and mentoring, I was responsible for developing the game’s language and learning systems. This included designing the curriculum and user experiences that would teach coding skills organically through gameplay.

  • External Agency Collaboration: To bolster the educational resources within the game, I collaborated with external agencies. This partnership helped in creating a robust set of learning materials and resources that would complement the game’s objectives.
  • User Testing with GCSE School Children: To ensure that the game met its educational goals effectively, I led user testing sessions involving GCSE school children. Their feedback and insights were invaluable in refining the game’s user experience and educational content.

Final Thoughts:

  • Challenges and Unfulfilled Potential: Unfortunately, despite the promise and potential of “Glitch” as an edutech experience, the project faced obstacles that prevented it from reaching the market. Contract changes with Apple and the project’s extensive scope relative to the investment made it unfeasible for release.
  • Future Ambitions: Despite the project’s setbacks, there remains a strong belief in the value of “Glitch” as an educational tool for teaching coding to children. The ambition to bring this product to the market persists, driven by the conviction that it has the potential to offer a transformative edutech experience.

In summary, “Glitch” was a visionary educational project that sought to merge gaming, AI, and coding education. While it faced challenges that prevented its release, the aspiration to deliver this innovative educational experience to young learners remains a compelling goal for the future.
